The Pullanapallil family is an old Knanaya Catholic family associated with Kottayam, Kerala, and particularly with the area today known as Sacred Heart Mount, or S.H. Mount.
The family name is found in historical and contemporary records under several English spellings, including Pullanapallil, Pullanappallil and Pullanapally. Despite these variations, the house name has remained an important link connecting generations of the family in Kerala and throughout the world.
For many members of the family, S.H. Mount represents the ancestral center of the modern Pullanapallil story.
Sacred Heart Mount occupies an important place in the history of the Knanaya Catholic community of Kottayam.
In 1921, Bishop Mar Alexander Choolaparambil acquired land outside Kottayam for the establishment of a religious community. A statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus was erected there on November 1, 1921, and the property became known as Sacred Heart Mount.
The Society of the Oblates of the Sacred Heart subsequently developed at S.H. Mount, and the area became an important religious and institutional center of the Diocese, and later Archeparchy, of Kottayam.
The Pullanapallil family's association with this area continued through succeeding generations, and numerous later records identify members of the family specifically as belonging to Pullanapallil House, S.H. Mount, Kottayam.
Because the name S.H. Mount itself dates only from 1921, the family's earlier generations would have been recorded under older local, parish or Kottayam place names. Recovering those earlier records remains an important part of documenting the complete history of the family.
Among the best-documented early generations currently identified is the family of P. T. Thomas and his wife Annamma Thomas.
Their descendants became involved in the commercial, professional and community life of Kottayam.
Available family and public records identify at least four members of the next generation:
Joy Thomas
Jimmy Thomas
Abraham Pullanappallil Thomas
Saji Pullanappallil Thomas
Additional sons or daughters may have belonged to this generation, and the family history remains under research.
Joy Thomas, described in family records as the eldest descendant of P. T. Thomas and Annamma Thomas, married Laila of the Kandarapallil family of Kurupanthara.
Their daughters Jelitta, Jeleena and Jereena subsequently established families of their own, extending the Pullanapallil family network into India, the United Kingdom and the United States.
Members of the Pullanapallil family became particularly visible in the commercial life of Kottayam.
Joy Thomas, Jimmy Thomas, Abraham Pullanappallil Thomas and Saji Pullanappallil Thomas became associated with Jelitta Publicity, which developed into a long-standing advertising enterprise based in Kottayam.
Abraham Thomas Pullanapallil also became associated with several business and financial enterprises, including Finvent Finance and Investments and Jubily Automobiles.
Their work represents one chapter in a wider Pullanapallil tradition of entrepreneurship and professional achievement.
Another documented branch descends through James P. Abraham, born in 1940.
James and his wife Saramma raised three children: Suja, Abraham and Jacob.
Family records identify James's brothers as Alexander, also known as Appu; Thampi Abraham; and Baby Pullanappallil. His sisters included Leelamma, Sophy and Jolly.
Members of this branch later established themselves in the United States, especially in Georgia, while maintaining their connection to the Pullanapallil house name and the Knanaya community.
The precise relationship between this branch and the descendants of P. T. Thomas is still being researched.
By the closing decades of the twentieth century, members of the Pullanapallil family were becoming part of the growing Knanaya community in North America.
Community records from the 1990s document Pullanappallil family members participating in Knanaya youth organizations in the New York area.
Later generations continued this tradition of service.
Abraham Pullanapallil served in the leadership of the Knanaya Catholic community in the New York area and was Finance Secretary during the period in which the community acquired its church property in Hempstead.
In Georgia, Jacob James and Smitha Pullanapallil became part of the Knanaya Catholic Association of Georgia. Smitha James Pullanapallil later served as President of the association's Women's Forum.
Through these families and many others, the Pullanapallil name has traveled from Kottayam to communities across North America and elsewhere while retaining its connection to the ancestral house.
The story of Pullanapallil is larger than a list of names and dates.
It is the story of generations connected by family, faith and a shared ancestral identity.
The family developed within the Knanaya Catholic tradition of Kottayam and grew alongside institutions that shaped the community during the twentieth century. As succeeding generations pursued education, business and professional careers and migrated throughout India and overseas, they carried their family traditions with them.
Today the Pullanapallil family includes descendants living across Kerala, other parts of India, North America, Europe and elsewhere.
Though separated by geography, the ancestral house name continues to provide a connection between generations.
The Pullanapallil Family History Project seeks to document this heritage for future generations.
Our goal is to identify the earliest generations of the family, reconstruct the branches that descended from the ancestral household, preserve photographs and stories of those who came before us, and document the journeys of family members who established new lives around the world.
This history remains a work in progress.
Family members who possess old photographs, baptismal or marriage certificates, memorial cards, family Bibles, property records or oral histories are encouraged to contribute them so that the story of Pullanapallil can be preserved accurately for generations to come.
From Kottayam to the world, we remain connected by one house, one history and generations of shared memories — Pullanapallil.
One particularly useful piece of evidence is the family of P. T. Thomas and Annamma Thomas.
A family biography published by the family of Joy Thomas identifies him as belonging to the Pullanapallil family of the Knanaya Catholic community in the Archdiocese of Kottayam and describes him as the eldest descendant of P. T. Thomas and Annamma Thomas. Jubily Joy
More importantly, a 2026 Kerala High Court record independently connects several sons of P. T. Thomas with the Pullanappallil house in Kottayam and S.H. Mount. It identifies:
Joy Thomas
Jimmy Thomas
Abraham Pullanappallil Thomas
Saji Pullanappallil Thomas
as members of the family, with Jimmy and Saji specifically associated with Pullanappallil House, S.H. Mount, Kottayam.
Joy Thomas Pullanappallil represents a generation of the family associated with business and community life in Kottayam. A descendant of P. T. Thomas and Annamma Thomas, he has been associated with enterprises including Jelitta Publicity and with institutions serving the wider Knanaya community.
His business activities extend beyond Jelitta Publicity. Corporate disclosures identify Abraham Thomas Pullanapallil as Chairman and Managing Director of Finvent Finance and Investments, with related business interests including Jelitta Publicity and Jubily Automobiles.
Jimmy and Saji are independently identified in Kerala records as sons of P. T. Thomas of Pullanappallil House/S.H. Mount. Both have also served as directors of Jelitta Publicity.
Abraham Pullanapallil became part of the generation that carried the family's Knanaya heritage from Kottayam to North America. He served as President of the New York KCYL and later held leadership responsibilities within the Knanaya Catholic community in the New York area, including service as Finance Secretary during the acquisition of the community's church property.
Smitha James Pullanapallil represents a newer generation of Pullanapallil community leadership in North America, serving as President of the Knanaya Catholic Association of Georgia Women's Forum for 2025–2026.
